Get down on it

I'm lucky. My travel has taken me to some gorgeously warm destinations lately. Unfortunately I need some sort of coat to get me to the not-so-warm airport, and keep me warm when I return with my rocking tan but have to wait for a cab. And wait and wait. In the cold. So I dug out this jacket I bought last year for my Kilimanjaro climb. This specific one is by Cloudveil and called Bivouac. I believe it's discontinued, but still available online from various retailers (just google it). The point is that it is super warm, and...

weee PC!

I've been stalking this computer ever since I read about it six months ago. And two days ago, I got it. Why? Because I'm sic of lugging a mac laptop around the world - it weighs too much and I don't need every single bit of personal information with me when I travel. All I really need is email and word processing. And now I've got it in a teensy package that weighs almost nothing. It's everything the reviews say - wifi works perfectly. Keyboard, at 7" is a bit small but I'll get used to it. link...

Shaken, stirred, whatever

....when you have this glass? I mean, does it really matter if it's even a martini? Wouldn't, say, a POM spritzer look fabulous in it? Yes, it would. This is the latest in the Inside Out series by AlissiaMT, whose champagne glass (from the same series) I wrote about for Best Bets online (see nymag.com). As with the bubbly glass, this one is double-walled meaning your beautifully chilled drink stays that way (no hand warming). And, since it is stemless, it's perfect for those of us with teensy shelves that cannot hold tall, lean glasses. A win-win all around, for...

The nose knows. Or does it?

I was recently sent this "Cannabis" candle by Malin & Goetz. What a way to get a person's attention? Would I reap the benefits of said scent now legally? I lit it up and waited. And waited. And what i smelled was ...

Reaching new heights

My shoe obsessed friends and I have been bemoaning the lack of shoes this season. We're not adverse to plopping down the Amex for a shoe we love, but there's no shoe we love. None. Nada. Zip. I've searched from Bergdorfs to DSW and have come up empty handed. And footed. But on a recent trip to Houston, I trolled the Galleria with my friend Gail (not be confused with Oprah's best friend Gail) and found these at Steve Madden. In a word - gorgeous. They look like $900 shoes - and we should know. The...

Multi tasking

It's no secret that I love lighting. Lamps, to me, are like the shoes of a room. They make or break it, just like shoes make or break an outfit. This is my latest favorite, discovered at the NY Gift show in the Droog booth. It's by Dick van Hoff for Makkum and is unfortunately, at $695, a bit pricey (thank you, Mr. Euro). But still gorgeous to look at. ...

A travel must-have

I've been traveling a lot this year. My accountant always asks me to keep track of my days spent out of town, and as of 9/1 the number was 81. Needless to say, I've got a list of musts for making air travel more comfortable when flying, especially on long trips. Must #1 - ear plugs or Bose headphones for blocking out noise. Must #2 - muji eye mask. Hands down, the best one I've used. And my brand new Must #3 - this inflatable foot rest from Magellan. Sexy? Hardly. But a footrest is really what makes...

The Virgin Experience

I recently flew Virgin America from JFK to San Francisco. Before I go further, I must say this: Do not EVER take a domestic flight out of JFK on evenings around 6:30 or 7 pm. Why? That's when all the overseas flights leave. So? Your flight WILL be delayed. Lots of airplanes, limited runways. Our flight was delayed FOR TWO HOURS. After two hours trapped on the ground, no coach class flight will be dreamy. Here's the deal - The lighting is nice. Purple or pink, not that garish white stuff. The seats are nice and new and have both a normal outlet to plug...

Just Shoot Me

I don't know why anyone didn't think of this sooner. They call them "flasks on the fly" - Pocket Shots of gin, rum, vodka, whiskey or tequila. In a plastic pouch. Cost: $2. No joke. I'm wondering if it's under 3 ounces so we can carry them on long flights...

Family Jewels

I've spent this week working in San Francisco. The weather is fantastic, as is the food (although lack of delivery and long wait times at good take-out places can be annoying). But the view, well, that's by far the best. This is what I see from my "office" in the Chinatown area. If you click on the images you'll get a larger version. I especially love how in picture #1 the man (yes, that's a man's underwear) managed to clip his socks on as well. ...
