When Doug Meyer was tapped to design Flexform’s space at DIFFA’s Dining by Design event in 2015, he knew he wanted to create an installation that reminded guests of the original reason the organization was founded. Meyer, a conceptual artist and designer who, with his brother Gene, creates collections of fabric, wallpaper, rugs and tiles, created three-dimensional hand-made “portraits” of some of the earliest creatives lost to AIDS — including designers Angela Donghia and Robert Metzger and architect Alan Buchsbaum — and installed them in the space, along with their obituaries from the New York Times. The installation was later shown at Liz O’Brien Gallery in New York and traveled to Miami and Los Angeles. Now it is immortalized in a book, HEROES: A Tribute (Tra Publishing). “The book is my way of letting people know that these men and women existed,” said Meyer of the tome. “The lives and contributions of these creative souls, their very existence, has been lost to younger generations. I didn’t want to stand by and let that happen.”

The book is available in three stamped, signed and numbered limited editions, featuring portraits of the 50 heroes. Two editions will include a stand-alone print of a 51st hero. From $95, trapublishing.com.
